As women go through hormonal changes what occurs that affects the skin?

Oh the fascinating world of perimenopause and menopause! As our bodies start to go through hormone shifts and produce less estrogen, our skin may become drier, less supple and dull. Once you are in actual menopause, the estrogen continues to dip (if you’re not on HRT) which can have more profound impacts on our skin. This is when you see the decrease in it’s elasticity, firmness and overall collagen production.

What lifestyle questions are you asking your clients before you come up with a skincare regimen?

I want to know far more than just what they are using on their skin. Are they active? Do they have a significant amount of caffeine and dairy in their diet? What’s their stress level like and are they taking care of their emotional well being? There is so much to discuss as far as a skincare routine and which facial to offer.

What would people be surprised to know about tackling the problems?

  • Hydrate from within, nourish your skin with a healthy diet focused on non-inflammatory foods

  • Find a sleep pattern

  • Manage stress

  • A great skincare regimen

What ingredients should you look for?

These are staples most everyone will benefit from:

  • Retinoids

  • Vitamin C

  • Peptides

  • Niacinamide

  • AHA’s

Is sleep a factor?

This is the magical time when our bodies rejuvenate, repair and regenerate. While sleeping, our body is in repair mode, and this is when collagen is produced which helps to keep our skin firm, youthful and plump. Sleep deprivation can increase our stress hormone levels which can lead to inflammation.

 Give us a key takeaway!

Be kind to yourself. This is a natural phase of life that can feel pretty funky. Self-care can move mountains as can a steady sleep pattern.
